Almost Loved You

We collided in a café when you sat at my table.
We made awkward small talk. You were funny and playful.
Out on our first date, we laughed ‘til we cried.
I was in Heaven having you by my side.

And I almost believed you
when you said you’d be true.
I thought you’d be faithful,
but deep down I knew.

You were beguiling
until you said, “We’re through.”
You broke my heart,
but I almost loved you.

Looking back now, I missed all the signs.
All of those times I caught you in a lie.
So many excuses I let myself believe.
I should’ve known that in time you would leave.

And I almost believed you
when you said you’d be true.
I thought you’d be faithful,
but deep down I knew.

You were beguiling
until you said, “We’re through.”
You broke my heart, but I almost loved you.

Like an actor, you put on a show.
I thought you cared, but what did I know.
You had other lovers,
& played me for a fool.
You went from charming
to completely cruel.

And I almost believed you
when you said you’d be true.
I thought you’d be faithful,
but deep down I knew.

You were beguiling
until you said, “We’re through.”
You broke my heart,
but I almost loved you.
