A little girl with pigtails,
playing with her baby doll;
filled with youthful innocence,
she always does just what she’s told.
In her mind, she lives in castles
with her prince in fairy tales,
There’s no dragons in her world.
No enemies to impale.
She knows that she is loved
because that’s what parents do,
but she begins to doubt herself
as she uselessly reaches out for you.
How can you not love her,
the little girl with big green eyes?
How can you ignore her
when you can’t help but hear her cries?
She’ll always love her daddy because that’s what a daughter does,
but you’ll always be as cold as ice because that’s how you learned to love.
You blink & she’s a girl of ten,
who knows fairytales aren’t real.
She builds tall walls around her because she’s afraid to feel.
Now, she is a woman,
who knows exactly who you are.
She still yearns for your approval,
but each time, you leave another scar.
Do you know that she is broken,
and the damage is from you?
Do you know that she keeps hoping
that one day you’ll love her too?
If you could see the future,
when she was just a child,
would you change your cold demeanor?
Can you even say you’d try?
A picture on the fridge reminds her
who she used to be.
She wonders how you couldn’t love her,
that sweet girl that’s only three.
