Eternal Love Story

Sitting in your truck on our first date,
we rode ‘round those back roads.
You intertwined your hand with mine,
as we declared that song our own.

At your house, we cuddled on the couch.
You draped a blanket on me,
and said that I deserved a good guy,
& you’d treat me like a queen.

And when I looked in your eyes,
everything disappeared,
It was just you, me, & our future,
which I saw so clear.

You said fate brought us together,
and in my eyes, you saw the light.
But we went directly from our first kiss
right to our first big fight.

For 15 years, it was you & me,
a lovers ramp of off & on;
half the time, madly in love with you,
and the other half, totally done.

But when I looked in your eyes,
everything disappeared.
It was just you, me, & our future
which I saw so clear.

You were a wandering traveler,
and I was your true North.
You came back each time you left,
for whatever that was worth.

I remember the day that I got your text,
the one that said you were engaged.
You even sent a picture of yourself
on the beach with your fiancé.

I had told myself you loved me
each time you came back to me.
Now, I realized I was your safety net
and that you’d never set me free.

But when I looked in your eyes,
everything faded away.
It was just you, me, & our future,
the one that disappeared that day.

You had an unhappy marriage,
so you called me up one night.
I met you at the bar for a drink
and said, “Go home to your wife.”

I realized I could never be with you
‘cause I’d never break down your walls;
and I had my fill of being
at your constant beck-and call.

But as I looked in your eyes,
everything still faded away.
It was just you, me, & our future,
but it cost a price I couldn’t pay.

Now, when you hear that song from our first date,
I hope you think of me
and know that you fucked up your one chance at an eternal love story.
