They were talking in the kitchen
when she saw them roll their eyes.
She had always been the black sheep,
so she wasn’t that surprised.
They were serious & worldly;
she was sheltered & naive.
Yet, she had lived a lifetime by the age of 33.
She thought, “I have been to Hell & back,
the Devil was my sire.
But I beat him at his own game,
and I left stoking that fire.
So, go ahead & judge me.
I’m not gonna break like glass.
You’ll see me flying like a phoenix,
rising from the ash.”
Now, no one’s life is easy,
every person has their rain.
But their lives had flowed smoothly,
while hers was full of pain.
Her body fought against her. She was at war to just survive,
but they only saw dependence & weakness in her eyes.
She thought, “I have been to Hell & back,
the Devil was my sire.
But I beat him at his own game,
and I left stoking that fire.
So, you may think you know me,
might think I’m made of glass.
You’ll see me flying like a phoenix,
rising from the ash.”
She fought through all the storms in life,
and climbed the highest hills.
And her family watched in wonder
as all of her dreams were fulfilled.
She said, “I have been to Hell & back,
the Devil was my sire.
But I beat him at his own game,
and I left stoking that fire.
You always thought you knew me,
thought I was made of glass.
Now, I’m flying like a phoenix,
I rose up from the ash.”
“Just watch me flying like a phoenix,
I rose up from the ash.”
